Oskar Jakobsen

(b.1986)

At the base of Oskar Jakobsen's work lies an ongoing investigation of new synthetic materials such as aluminium, carbonfibres, electronics and more.

He explores the properties of the materials and the way they push our society and perception of ourselves forward. A perpetual playfulness drives him into new projects seeking out our frontier, which in turn maps the mind of the restless artist.

By referring to history, and by combining historical symbols, such as the marble obelisk, with new synthetic media and technology, Jakobsen's works fold and unfold itself in space and time, between different temporalities and places, both physical and virtual. His works activate the viewer, blurring the boundaries between viewer and work, and thereby, raise questions of how the digital environment affects our understanding of the physical world.

Key elements in Jakobsen's works are the systems and networks that connect us. These complex systems are translated into a wide variety of different media, with an outset in sculpture and installation. They render visible the invisible networks of virtual interactions in a digitized sociality of smartphones, tablets etc.

Oskar Jakobsen was born in 1986 in Sweden. He lives and works in Copenhagen and London. He graduated from The Royal College of Art, London in 2015. His work have been shown in exhibitions at, amongst others, À Côté Du 69, Nantes (FR); fourFOLD, London (UK); Dovehouse Green, London (UK) and Galleri Rotor, Gothenburg (SE).
