Christine Overvad Hansen

Christine Overvad Hansen works with sculpture in an extended field. Her artistic practice ranges from large sculptural works and installations to mechanical sculptures andcomprehensive performances. Her works are both recognizable and alien and they often move in the borderland between the physically experienced and the speculatively fictional.
With the body as a central element - both as a recurring theme, instrument and material in her sculptural process, Christine Overvad Hansen's works connect to our shared memory, our ways of entering into social relationships and exchanges and our way of constructing social codes and standards. Christine Overvad Hansen works with a great sense of both materials and the body's potential for change, their transforming power as well as for the exchanges that constantly take place between sculpture and body. She operates in a field of tension between the fixed, unchanging and the open, flexible - that which can be manipulated.
Overvad Hansen often combines traditional materials, such as bronze and glass, with materials related to fields other than the traditional sculptural. By further merging these with performative means, Overvad Hansen's sculptures often possess an alluring, yet repressed familiarity both in their form, materiality, surface or possible function, and her sculptures can be considered as individual personas, each of whom tells stories of physical and mental states. Individuals who simultaneously seek to both enter into communities and break out of relationships.
In the same way that Christine Overvad Hansen in her process, physically, welds metals together, she often welds seemingly contradictory phenomena and systems together; technological programming, information technology, and static contacts, encounter subtle manipulation techniques, codes of sensual interaction, subculture, self-help phenomena, and emotional control that almost creeps under the skin. But it is precisely in this exchange that Overvad Hansen, through mechanical repetitions, soft modeled forms in bronze, burnt stoneware and feathers, instantly facilitates a place and a space where these states, systems and patterns of action actually become possible to break. Looking at the works of Overvad Hansen, the viewer is always invited to engage in a flirtatious and at times humorous exploration.
