Henrik Olai Kaarstein - Lei Deg - Installation view - Island 5 / Christian Torp Gallery - 2018

The work of Henrik Olai Kaarstein centres around the investigation of and the interplay of materiality and the sensitivities and interrelation of colours, surfaces, strokes of paint and crayon and the mash up of unorthodox painterly media.

From found and available material he creates, often expansive, work, with bold expressions in both form and colour. The work maintains a very individual feel with the juxtapositions of colours and subject matter entirely his own.

Creating compelling and highly aesthetic works out duck tape, red vinyl, silk paper, crayon, mdf, backpacks, towels, photo copies and so on. Kaarstein plays outside any of the established rules of painting utilising his own free expression carrying on from where Arte Povera and Fluxus left off creating his own mash up of materials and personal expressions.

A succinct individual take on image making Kaarstein's works often depict elements of personal experiences and acquaintances carried over onto the surfaces in both abstract and figurative form. Drawings of chance meetings, past lovers, film stills and photographies his own and found together with fragmented elements of patterns, animals and so on, make up his artistic universe.

Henrik Olai Kaarstein was born in 1989 in Oslo, Norway. He lives and works in Brussels and Oslo. He graduated from Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main in 2015. Recent solo exhibitions include ”New Promises” at C-o-m-p-o-s-i-t-e, Brussels. Recent group presentations include Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, Vestfossen; Carl Kostyal, Stockholm and Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo.
