Still Locomotions Ava Samii

16.0821.09.2024

Gether Contemporary is proud to present Ava Samii’s first solo presentation with the gallery: Still Locomotions. In this exhibition, she introduces a new body of work dealing with images of closeness, motion, perception, and nostalgia.

Samii’s work captures the essence of slight displacements, embracing the mobility of memory, imagination, and recollection. The exhibition disrupts linear narratives, inviting viewers to perceive time in unconventional ways, emphasised by the use of anachronisms.

The exhibition comprises framed snapshots printed using a lenticular method, creating images with an illusion of depth that can move as they are viewed from different angles. Lenticular images are associated with travel postcards or childhood souvenirs portraying scenes like roaring dinosaurs or beach sunsets, and therefore by default denote a sense of nostalgia. These types of images allow you to see things from different angles, making it a tangible piece of memory, capturing multiple perspectives simultaneously. In Still Locomotions, Samii leaves the conventional composed and distant landscapes of postcards, opting instead for candid snapshots taken in her familiar, local settings. These photographs explore the nuances of the impressions given and received when moving around on a daily basis.

Through a blend of intimate narratives and visual codes nodding towards the cute, the kitch and the teenage-like, Samii crafts perceptive and performative images that are in constant motion. Still Locomotions asks us questions on how we perceive time and memories within the visual field, ultimately emphasising alternative ways of looking and remembering.
