YEARN! Sif Itona Westerberg

30.0926.11.2022

We are proud to present Sif Itona Westerberg's second solo exhibition at the gallery: Yearn!

In the exhibition, Sif Itona Westerberg deals with the modern psyche's battle between body and spirit, nature and spirituality and examines whether there is a collective "primordial longing" for a reunification of the physical with the meta-physical and a return to an anchoring in nature. Articulating a desire to be reborn into a planetary body, the exhibition explores alternative forms of navigation in a rapidly changing world with pressing climate challenges. Yearn! weaves past, present and future together by examining the mythologies associated with the natural world to which we are inextricably linked.

In Yearn! Sif Itona Westerberg presents for the first time in her practice, new bronze sculptures as well as a series of aerated concrete reliefs - staged by brightly coloured textiles or draperies and colored walls. For the bronze sculptures, Itona Westerberg takes her outset in archaic bronze sculptures portraying the human body and form, but here she leaves the figures depicted in a state somewhere between formation and dissolution. From the bodies of the sculptures, outstretched limbs and ponytails move outwards, stretching longingly in their quest to burst the barrier of the human body, questioning the idea of the ideal human form. These tentacle-like limbs and ponytails grow on into the aerated concrete reliefs on the walls, weaving in and out of each other in a tangle of plants that seem at war with themselves and each other - a scene that seems like a violent dance in which the twisted elements on one side clinging to each other and on the other hand trying to break free.

Sif Itona Westerberg's exhibition deals with the complexity of connectedness and injects an awareness in the viewer on the cohesion and interdependence of life forms. It opens up the possibility of seeing ourselves, not as the main character, but as extras in nature's drama of life, death, birth, sexuality and longing.
